Untitled Star | 2010

Officially renamed star, unaltered documentation (map & certificate)
12" x 16" unframed

About 30 years ago, a private company with offices around the world, began selling the right to rename stars in the universe. To date, over one million stars have been renamed by people, typically as a gift for a loved one or to honour someone, usually after death. It is stated that no star is duplicated and once named, it can never be renamed. This work addresses their ingenious business model of selling a product they do not own, by rescuing one star in the solar system from being named after a pet, girlfriend etc and instead, by officially naming it “Untitled”, guarantees that if all the stars should at some point be renamed, there will still be one star held for the people at large.
